VW Transporter (Caravelle) Versus Vauxhall Movano (Renault Master): Camper Van Conversion

VW versus Movano

I’m 6 foot tall. That means I want a bed that’s at least 6’2″ so I can stretch out and an internal van height of at least 6’1″ so that I can walk around. Years ago I had a VW bay window campervan called Jess (Lady Jessica the First to be precise) and I loved her. But I couldn’t actually go in the back without doing an impression of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. So for cooking, changing and anything else I’d have to pop the roof, which also meant going outside and undoing the catches. That was a pain if it was raining. Sleeping also meant sorting out the rock and roll bed which was a faff when you’re dead tired and just want to lay down.

Now I have a Vauxhall Movano (it’s a Renault Mastervan, just re-badged by Vauxhall – perhaps I should call it a Mastano?). As you can see from the picture above the movano is significantly taller, even though the Movano is parked about 1 meter further away from the camera. Inside despite the inner panels and insulation it’s 6’2″ of height clearance and the bed is permanantly available and over 6′ long! This photo shows a rough comparison between a VW Transporter and the Movano. Parked up in Castel Madama at my friends villa near Rome Italy.
